Owing to rapid industrialisation of our country, fluid power systems are increasingly being used in numerous applications and the number of people working in fluid power technology is fast growing. In an effort to bring together those working in this field, scientists from the National Aeronautical Laboratory and the India Institute of Science organised a Symposium on Fluid Power Control and Applications in February 1973 at NAL, Bangalore. Participants in this Symposium (representing various industries, R&D organisations and academic institutions) expressed themselves in favour of establishing a national society to promote the growth of fluid power technology. Thus the Fluid Power Society of India came into being on 13th February 1973 at Bangalore.

Objectives of such a society are thought to be:

  1. To promote and foster the need to know the activities in the field of fluid power in India and elsewhere.
  2. To arrange for the exchange of experience and new developments in the field of fluid power amongst different organizations.
  3. To build up a Central Technical Information Centre for the benefit of all concerned in the field of fluid power.
  4. To promote technical and commercial interests of manufacturers, users and academicians through technical talks and conferences within the scope of the society.
  5. To nurture the cause of fluid power technology comprising oil hydraulics and pneumatics including fluidics.

With the above objectives in view an Adhoc Committee was formed from amongst those attending the Symposium to go into the spade work prior to establishing the Society. The untiring efforts of this committee have resulted in framing a constitution for the Society on lines similar to those of comparable societies in the country. Subsequently, the Fluid Power Society of India was registered under the Karnataka Societies Act with registration number S/N 280/73-74 dated 14th November 1973. Following the same, the Adhoc Committee undertook the task of enrolling members. Thanks to the spirited response of the engineers working in the field of fluid power in different organizations both in Bangalore and outside, the society gained a strength of over 50 members in a short time. It is but proper to record here, appreciation for the excellent work done by the Adhoc Committee.
