Industry-Academia Interaction Program was organized by FPSI on 23rd Feb 2013 at Hotel Capitol.
An initiative by Fluid Power Society of India to strengthen relation between industry & academic people.
Senior Executives from WIPRO, Yuken India ,L&T Komatsu Ltd, Hycom Engineering Festo, Preac India , Sai Motors and Winch House and HODS of top colleges like PESIT,RV College of Engineering, BMS,BMSIT,BIT,MSRIT, Dayananda Sagar college of Engineering, NIE Mysore, SIT Thumkur, JSS College Of engineering, NMIT and Foreman Institute of Training actively participated in this round table discussion.
Opening remarks by President
Mr Seethapathy Rao , president Fluid Power Society Of India briefed the participants about the potential of Fluid power industry and opportunities it provides to the young professionals/students. In his opening remark he indicated that FPSI is a catalyst and provides a platform to industry and academia to meet and have fruitful interaction for mutual benefit. He also recollected the vital role played by FPSI to include Fluid Power as an Elective subject in Visvesvaraya Technological University.
He highlighted various area in which industry can support to academia: Providing support in upgrading the syllabus of Fluid power subject, opportunity to students for Industrial Visit, Internship, and sponsoring the project works etc. He also suggested that when all are equal (academic performance and personality of candidate) industry can give priority in job opportunity to the students with Fluid power as Elective subject.
Dr Murthy from Yuken India has expressed that when sponsoring research project confidentiality of the company related information is of major concern. However it was indicated by participants from academic side that colleges can provide undertaking to protect industry specific data/information.
Mr Jan Nilsson VP & Global Engineering Head from WIPRO Infrastructure Engineering briefed about University –Industry cooperation practiced in Europe. According to him an Association Fluid power Industry and universities regularly meets for prioritization of Research in universities and also this association contributes some funding. Industry also contributes with parts and equipment.
He further indicated how universities are arranging special seminar wherein entire Fluid power industries are invited.
HODs of from many colleges suggested that FPSI to arrange seminar/ presentation by industry expert. They also offered that FPSI can use the infrastructure facilities available in their college for organising these events. They felt that this seminar/presentation will help to promote interest in fluid power subject among student’s communities.
Many autonomous colleges indicated that they can improve/upgrade the curriculum based on the need of the industry; however they requested the participation from industry to upgrade/modify the syllabus. However some of the faculties expressed that change in curriculum alone is not sufficient but teaching faculties also needs to be trained by training the trainer program.
Further they asked FPSI to Start Students Chapter in colleges on similar lines of SAE to promote fluid power. Suggest guest lectures, invited talks, etc on continuous basis to keep the interest.
Also it was suggested that FPSI can help academia by providing database of projects related to Fluid Power subject which can be taken up by the students.
HODs suggested that Funding of projects even in the band of Rs.5000- Rs.10000 will encourage the students.
Industry leaders suggested that colleges can set up a lab with testing facility required by industry which helps them to be self-sufficient and have close interaction with industry. For example testing facility for contamination level in oil which is a regular requirement for many industries. HOD from MSRIT confirmed that fund is not a constraint if the project is beneficial to the students.
Overall this event helped to industry and Academia to come together and know each other expectations. List of contacts of Industrial leaders and HODs with their mail id and Phone number has been provided to the participants so that they can interact directly and take it up further.
From industry side it was suggested that participation of professors from two leading colleges in FPSI Council will be helpful in various such initiatives
